Translation by phrase

Postby pedrofiets » Fri Mar 19, 2010 10:49 am

After using anwiki and reading the forums I think there is a need to tune the way anwiki translation works a little bit. I think it is possible join the edit and translation mode.

Text translation is done bit by bit, or phrase by phrase. In anwike html markup is used to separate those phrases. For translation a more natural separation is needed. Phrases can be headings, sentences, or paragraphs. In mine opinion anwiki improves if we find a way to embed this philosophy.

Maybe this is a way.
When writing the text you can add phrases. Within these phrases there can be markup header, bold, etc. (using ckeditor would be nice). On completion the phrase is analyzed and stored. On the screen it shows as an widget with the text, wysiwyg with markup, on the left site. An column on the right site shows the special items like images and links.

After editing stores text, simple ask if the content changed or it was just modification (like spelling correction). If the content didn't change, no translation is necessary.

On translation you see the original text in the same widget as mentioned above. (It would be very luxurious to see the difference between present text, and text before the last edit.)
However a second widget with the text to translate is shown under the first. You can type your translation here. It is also possible to edit the links and images in the right column.
After completion maybe the markup can be inspected, so you can warn if that peace of bold text is missing.

Maybe this triggers a discussion for improvement. But don't forget: Anwiki is great software. Keep up the good pace!!

Hi pedrofiets,

Sorry for the very late answer, and many thanks for your suggestions.
If I understand, the main idea is to allow "natural separation" of phrases, and to separate translations of texts (on the left column) and special items (such as links, buttons labels, images... on the right column).
In example, it would be possible to translate "natural phrases" including HTML markup such as : "this is a <b>natural</b> phrase with <a href='http://google.com">translatable links</a>".

Translators could freely edit HTML markup with a rich text editor (CKEditor is on the roadmap), so it would be potentially possible to a sentence translated with different HTML markup in various languages.
I like this idea. The right column for special items may be tricky, but the "natural phrases" support should not be that hard to implement.

Now the question is : how "natural phrases" will be marked by editors ? I think adding one phrase after the other may be very boring... editors still need to be able to write the whole page, then "cut" each natural phrase... maybe using a special character as delimiter ?
